English for International Students
We will help you meet your English proficiency requirements to attend a Canadian university or college!
Which academic English tests do Canadian universities accept?
English is the primary language of instruction at most Canadian Universities and Colleges. Post-secondary students in Canada listen to lectures, participate in class discussions, make presentations, and write reports and essays.
If English is not your native language or if you’ve been educated in another language, you are required to submit documents that demonstrate you are proficient in English listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
Prospective international students must demonstrate they meet minimum English levels to be accepted into university/college. This is most commonly achieved by:
- Taking an English language proficiency test, such as IELTS, TOEFL, CAEL, or Duolingo English; or,
- Completing an English for Academic Purposes program at the institution you will attend.
Take the IELTS or TOEFL English Proficiency test
Two of the most widely accepted tests of English proficiency for study in Canada are IELTS-Academic and TOEFL internet-based test (iBT), which both test your listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
Canadian higher education institutions typically require the following minimum scores:
- IELTS-Academic Test Band of 6.5 overall with no single score below 6.0;
- TOEFL iBT between 80 to 90 overall.
Test takers must achieve minimum scores on each of the four parts to the exam. It’s also important to note that results are only valid from a single test sitting (i.e. results from more than one test sitting cannot be combined). English language admission standards differ from college to college.

English for work and immigration in Canada
We will help you document your professional foreign experience in your application to work and immigrate in Canada!
Canada’s Express Entry worker program assesses your English proficiency and economic drive
A great pathway for you to become a Canadian permanent resident is by immigrating through a federal government worker program called Express Entry.
English and French are Canada’s two official languages. A ranking system for Express Entry candidates assigns one-third of all possible points to your English communicative abilities.
The maximum score an applicant can get is 34 points for each language skill (136 point in total)! Moreover, candidates with a high English level (CLB level 9 or above) may be awarded 100 points by combining a CLB level 9 with proof of a post-secondary degree or three years of work experience.
English proficiency is measured against Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
The CLB system is the national standard used to describe language ability from basic to advanced. CLB is used for the assessment of four language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It’s organized on a 12-point scale for English as a Second Language (ESL) Proficiency:
- Stage I: Basic Proficiency (Levels 1-4);
- Stage II: Intermediate Proficiency (Levels 5-8);
- Stage III: Advanced Proficiency (Levels 9-12).

Take CELPIP or IELTS Tests for Express Entry into Canada
The federal government’s Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) accepts results of the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests, whose scores are converted to CLB levels.
Meet English language requirements to work and immigrate in Canada
To apply for Express Entry, you must meet several first requirements, including English language proficiency.
For the popular Federal Skilled Workers Program, you must achieve CLB Level 7, equivalent to CELPIP grade 7 or IELTS 6.0 in all four skills. For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, you must achieve CLB level 5 in speaking and listening and CLB level 4 in writing and reading, equivalent to CELPIP grade 5 and 4 respectively or IELTS 5.0 for speaking and listening, and 3.5 for reading and 4.0 for writing.
